This pair of artworks consists of two German 19th-century pastel portraits of young women. Each drawing is housed in an ornate, deep-carved wood frame. The piece on the left depicts a young woman with a direct gaze, wearing a wide-brimmed, reddish-orange hat tied with a bow under her chin. The portrait on the right features a woman in a large, dark blue or black feathered hat and a sheer white scarf or collar around her neck. The portraits date to the mid-to-late 19th century and are examples of the popular, sentimental portraiture style of the era, which often emphasized the beauty and elaborate fashion of the subjects.
