Rufino del Carmen Arellanes Tamayo (1899–1991) was a celebrated Mexican painter, printmaker, and sculptor known for blending modern European styles with deep roots in Mexican culture. Born in Oaxaca, Tamayo drew inspiration from indigenous traditions, vibrant colors, and universal human themes. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he avoided overt political messages, focusing instead on emotion, humanity, and the cosmic connection between people and nature. His work—often featuring bold color palettes and textured surfaces—helped bring Mexican modernism to international prominence. Today, Tamayo is regarded as one of Mexico’s most influential and innovative artists.
